Gerónimo de Estrada

Brief Biography

There is only one Gerónimo de Estrada in the extant documentary record, so with some degree of confidence he is the expeditionary. He probably was born in Dueñas (Palencia) to Antonio Pastor and Isabel de Estrada. He obtained a license to travel to New Spain in February 1538. Gerónimo was present at the 1540 muster and was a member of Gutiérrez de la Caballería's company. A possible connection existed between Gerónimo and his captain. The royal treasurer Alonso de Estrada was the brother-in-law of Diego Gutiérrez de la Caballería as well as the father of doña Beatriz de Estrada, Vázquez de Coronado's wife. Did Gerónimo get his position in Gutiérrez de la Caballería's company because of a relationship to Alonso de Estrada? Upon the return of the Expedition to New Spain, Gerónimo was the encomendero in Castilaha, Culiacán.
