AGI, Patronato, 18, N.10, R.4 [Méritos y servicios, Pedro de Ortega Valencia, Lima, September 1569; Ortega states that "ha servicdo a su magestad en este reino y en el de tierra firme y veragua de veinte e tres años a esta parte y ultimamente en este nuevo descubrimiento de las yslas occidentales en que fue con cargo de vuestro maese de campo" (in other words, since about 1544); referred to a Pedro de Ortega; "descubrio otra [isla]...la llamo Guadalcanal por ser de alli nactural;" a Francisco Gutiérrez, residente de la ciudad de Guanuco, more than 35 years old, is a witness; he has known Pedro de Ortega for just six years];

2006) [p. 153-79: Pedro de Ortega Valencia, often called simply Pedro de Ortega, natural de Guadalcanal, discoverer and namer of Guadalacanal in the Salomon Islands in the Pacific; much of this information seems to come from AGI, 69-2-23 [Panama]; probably born about 1520; he was in Peru in 1554; he was evidently in Panama in 1548 and helped disrupt the plans of los Contreras to assassinate Pedro de la Gasca; in 1567 Ortega went on a voyage to the Pacific "al mando de la "Almiranta;" in May 1568 he assigned the name Guadalcanal to an island "la mejor y más fértil;" General Pedro de Ortega Valencia was factor real de la provincia del Perú in 1584; in 1593 in Quito Pedro de Ortega Valencia is referred to a mariscal when he prepares a probanza, two witnesses are Diego and Francisco Suárez de Figueroa; he was sent to Quito in 1592 to put down a mutiny over imposition of the alcabala; in 1593 Ortega says that he has been in Peru for 50 years (that is since 1543); in 1598 in Cuenca, Peru, Ortega, 80 years old more or less, "casi en lo último de mis días," says he has been in the provincia more than 50 years; his son is Gerónimo de Ortega Valencia; Pedro asked for a grant and that it be continued for an additional life;

AGI, Contratación, 471, N.4, R.2 [Quito, bienes de difuntos de Alonso de Aranda, mercader], native of Hinojosa, Maria de Aranda was sister to Alonso de Aranda; case in the Casa de Contratacion because the heirs have not received the money sent by Aranda, request made in Madrid 10 Dec. 1568; in Tierra Firme; Quito, 1 Jan 1564 it was stated that Aranda, merchant, died about 11 months before; heirs-Diego Mendez, Carlos de Salazar, Pedro de Ruanes, vecinos and Pedro de Ortega Guillén, vecino; his albaceas in Peru are Diego Méndez, Carlos de Salazar, and Pedro de Ruanes, all vecinos de Quito, also a Pedro de Ortega Guillén, also vecino de Quito];
