Francisco Martín (1) was present at the 1540 muster as a footman. We have arbitrarily assigned (1) to the footman and (2) to horseman. We have also applied the following logic in our determination that he was a native of Azuaga (Badajoz province) and a butcher. The native of Azuaga had a criado relationship with expeditionary Juan de Zaldívar. In Quivira Vázquez de Coronado ordered Zaldívar (or possibly Diego López) to execute El Turco and a Francisco Martín, a butcher, went and killed Turco. Also, when the native of Azuaga died he possessed a sword and crossbow, the very same items that the footman claimed at the muster. After the Expedition, Francisco returned to Culiacán and then worked in Zaldívar's mines in Zacatecas. His natural children and their mother lived with Vázquez de Coronado's sister-in-law.
